THE CHALLENGE Alternative current (AC) power is a far-from-perfect energy source. AC power technology has been around for over a century and was never designed to meet the stringent standards of today’s high-resolution audiovisual equipment. Power supply noise exists in the electrical grid, exacerbated by induced radiofrequency noise (captured by the power cord) and coupled to the devices’ power supplies and the circuit ground. This creates distortion and signal losses at low levels through a “masking effect.” Additionally, power amplifiers may require significant transient current reserves to allow their power supply to react and stabilize during highly dynamic audio passages. While many power cords and power regenerator-conditioners, while useful to some extent, fall short.

Power amplifiers pose a real challenge for any power source because the transient current needs (though short-lived) can be many times higher than the average current consumption (effective). Power amplifiers also differ from all other devices in that their current consumption is dynamic, not constant, as it evolves with the volume and content of the audio signal. While many power cords may have low resistance to direct current to partly meet this requirement, the cable’s characteristic impedance plays an equally important role in ensuring uncompromised performance. Many high-end power cords limit or compress audio transients because their characteristic impedance restricts transient currents.

THE SOLUTION

Highly Pure Conductors: The Hurricane high-current power cord uses carefully crafted conductors with a solid core of PSC+ (Perfect-Surface Copper+) copper to avoid strand interaction, a significant source of fatiguing transient intermodulation distortion during listening. Surprisingly smooth and pure, PSC+ copper eliminates harshness and greatly improves clarity compared to OFHC, OCC, 8N, and other higher-quality copper. The extreme purity of PSC+ copper further reduces distortion caused by grain boundaries, inherent in any metal conductor.

Uncompressed High-Current Transfer: With a current capacity of 20A RMS @ 125V, 50/60Hz (16A RMS @ 220-240V, 50/60Hz), the Hurricane high-current cord withstands transient current peaks many times higher than its nominal effective intensity (average). This makes the Hurricane high-current cord perfectly suited for a wide range of AC power conditioners, power regenerators, AC isolation transformers, and battery backup systems, as well as any power amplifier, powered subwoofer, active speaker, powered receiver, or integrated amplifier.

Ground Noise Dissipation Technology: The conductors in the ground circuit provide protection against current wiring faults but also act as antennas. As a result, they are susceptible to induced radiofrequency (RF) interference. AudioQuest’s patented RF/ND ground noise dissipation technology significantly reduces this distortion, providing unprecedented noise dissipation levels over the widest possible radiofrequency bandwidth. Our unique circuit topology relies on common-mode phase-cancellation geometry, combined with exclusive dielectric materials, ensuring additional linear differential filtering.

72VDC Dielectric Bias System (DBS) with Level-X RF Trap: All insulation is also a dielectric, and its electrical properties affect signal integrity. When insulation is unbiased, dielectric involvement (non-linear energy absorption and release in the signal flow) causes different amounts of time delays (phase shifts) for different frequencies and energy levels, a significant problem for highly time-sensitive multi-octave audio signals. AudioQuest’s patented multibank DBS creates a strong and stable electrostatic field that saturates and polarizes (organizes) the insulating molecules. This minimizes non-linear delays, resulting in a clearer sound emerging from a “blacker” background. The Level-X RF trap (a technology developed for AudioQuest’s “Niagara” power product series) in the DBS battery pack “pulls” RF noise out of the cable, preventing RF from infiltrating the electronics. The DBS battery pack has a lifespan of approximately 10 years. Use the test button to check its status.

Controlled Directionality: All metal-drawn strands and conductors have a non-symmetric, and therefore directional, grain structure. CableTruth reduces the resulting RF impedance variation to eliminate noise that could cause distortion.

PSC+ Conductors – Very Pure Conductors

  • PSC+ (Solid Perfect-Surface Copper+) conductors prevent strand interaction, a major source of fatiguing transient intermodulation distortion for the ear.
  • The surprisingly smooth and pure Perfect-Surface Copper+ eliminates harshness and significantly increases clarity compared to OFHC, OCC, 8N, and other higher-quality copper.
  • The superior purity of PSC+ minimizes distortion caused by grain boundaries, present in any metal conductor.

RF/ND-TECH (Patented Radiofrequency Background Noise Dissipation)

  • US Patent #8,988,168.
  • AC ground wires provide protection against electrical short circuits but also act as an antenna, susceptible to induced radiofrequency (RF) noise.
  • AudioQuest’s patented RF/ND technology significantly reduces this distortion, allowing unprecedented noise dissipation across a wide radiofrequency bandwidth.
  • Our unique circuit topology uses a common-mode phase cancellation network, along with exclusive dielectric materials that provide additional linear differential filtering.

Uncompressed High-Current Transfer (Variable) – “Hurricane”

  • With a current capacity of 20 amperes RMS @ 125VAC 50/60Hz (16 amperes RMS @ 220-240VA 50/60Hz), the “Hurricane/High (Variable) Current” can withstand transient current peaks several times higher than its continuous RMS value (average).
  • This makes the “Hurricane/High (Variable) Current” perfectly suited for a wide range of AC power conditioners, power regenerators, AC isolation transformers, and battery backup devices, as well as any power amplifier, powered subwoofer, powered speaker, powered receiver, or integrated amplifier.

Directionality

  • All audio cables are directional.
  • The correct orientation is determined by listening to each batch of metal conductors used in each AudioQuest audio cable.
  • The direction of digital audio signal conductors is controlled in AudioQuest HDMI cables, and we even take care to lay out ARC (audio return channel) conductors in the opposite direction to ensure optimal performance of this function.
  • Arrows are prominently displayed on the connectors to ensure optimal sound quality.
